World Magazine:Small Christian Publication with a Big Heart

World Magazine is a relatively small publication with a big heart. For over 30 years World publishers have strived to bring readers the best information concerning Christians and conservatives around the world.  Bi-monthly readers can hold in their hands a hard-copy magazine  that covers the very latest in stories that are relevant to American Christians, and more specifically conservative Christians.  World offers stories on persecuted Christians across the globe, influential Christian and political organizations, domestic politics and news of the day.  They also boast an incredible editorial and writing staff.  Upon receiving my magazine in the mail the first thing I turn to is the last two pages of the publication to find my favorite writers’ op-eds: Andreé Seu and Marvin Olasky.  World also includes intelligent arts and entertainment reviews.  I often refer to it as the moral alternative to Newsweek. In fact, World is what replaced Newsweek for me as I began my shift into conservatism and no longer felt comfortable with the obviously skewed, biased coverage masquerading as “objectivity” Newsweek was offering me as a reader.  World has been an important anchor and information source for me as I navigate the world of politics and faith as a Christian conservative.

On February 17, World Magazine Associate Publisher Warren Cole Smith held a luncheon in Los Angeles for the magazine’s subscribers and fans.  It was simply an opportunity for “World-lings” – as we are lovingly referred to at World headquarters- to meet the people who work behind the scenes and share their opinions and thoughts.  I was privileged to attend with Susan Hartman, producer for the Real Side with Joe Messina.  We were honored to break bread and share our thoughts and ideas with Warren, Angela Lu (World Correspondent and editor of the new state site, worldcalifornia.com) and other subscribers who had come to share and network.

I love news magazines. There is something about holding a magazine in your hand, flipping through the pages and then flipping through them again to see what you may have missed.  I love the sound the pages make and how worn they look when I’ve finished with a particularly good edition.  I am still like a little kid when I go to the mailbox around publication time.  I still have that feeling of excitement as I open the box and peer in with that childlike anticipation, hoping that the latest edition is waiting for me there.  These days I do nearly everything digitally. I read on Kindle and surf on my computer and iPad, but still…there is something special about perusing the pages of a good magazine.

Warren expressed World’s desire to continue to make more inroads into the digital realm and I think that makes good business sense.  However, he was also careful to assure his readers that World is a hard copy publication above all else and they believe there will always be a market for that, in some way or another.  If you have not had the privilege of reading a World publication I strongly encourage you to do so.  Head over to their website or contact them using the information below and ask about a trial issue.  If you are Christian and conservative, you should be reading this magazine. There is no parallel to this magazine in the publishing world and it was an honor and privilege to meet with some of the people who make it happen every month.
