A debate on the Maryland House floor Thursday will set the stage for what is likely to be a close vote on a bill that could eventually legalize same-sex marriage in the state. It will take 71 votes to pass in the 141-member House. A pair of House panels approved the bill to be sent to a full vote 25 to 18 Tuesday, and a final vote is expected Friday.

Recent measures taken by lawmakers around the country to recognize same-sex marriage could indicate a change of pace in the movement. On Monday, Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) signed legislation making The Evergreen State the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage. That same day, New Jersey’s state Senate passed a bill to recognize same-sex marriage, despite Gov. Chris Christie’s (R) pledge that he’d veto the measure.
